Good Strategy is the half battle won

It was the topic of a Pulitzer-Prize-winning article in the Washington Post several years ago: what happens when one of the world’s greatest violinists plays six pieces of some of the most elegant music ever written on one of the most valuable violins ever made — but donned in street clothes, at a busy metro station in Washington D.C., and before an audience of roughly 1,000 morning commuters?

Not a great deal, it turns out, as Gene Weingarten describes in his article, “Pearls Before Breakfast” (a brilliant read, made even better by the videos). The master violinist in question, Joshua Bell, only made seven people stop and linger. A full three minutes went by before a man turned his head ever so slightly, and it took six minutes for someone to momentarily stand still to listen. Not counting a donation by a woman who recognized Bell, he collected the grand total of $32.17 — a far cry from his usual playing fees.

The experiment was intended to test whether people recognize beauty in everyday life — whether “in a banal setting at an inconvenient time, beauty transcends,” as Weingarten put it. But the moment I first read the article, it struck me that Bell’s experiences hold lessons for everyone seeking to advance their career.

A first insight is that the challenge that Joshua Bell faced is that he is competing for people’s attention. This is the core problem that managers and many others in the workplace experience every day. It may seem that a master violinist had a head start on his competition, since he’s likely far more talented and far better trained than a typical street performer, but having a great product isn’t enough. That’s another critical truth. Bell’s playing was described by one expert as doing “nothing less than tell human beings why they bother to live” but it still wasn’t sufficient to draw attention. “It was a strange feeling, that people were actually, ah… ignoring me,” Bell told Weingarten. It’s a fate that befalls many who rely solely on product quality and forget to “market” that product — even if they are the product. This is as true for a virtuoso performer like Bell as it is for freshly minted MBA alumni.

Bell’s performance at the metro station was purposefully devoid of any indication that suggested he is, in fact, a superstar worthy of people’s attention. It was the worst marketing strategy imaginable: the wrong location, the wrong time, and (with his street clothes) the wrong image. If the goal had been to attract attention, even a few little adjustments would have gone a long way: picking a place in the station where commuters naturally stand still, placing a banner displaying his name, or hiring a few fans to serve as his cheering section, to name just a few examples. In many ways, everyone who is competing for attention in the workplace needs a strategy, too — even paying attention to seemingly minor details can go a long way.

In thinking through strategies designed to effectively compete for attention, I think there is a lot to learn from the creative industries, which are full of people who are masters at getting others to listen, watch, read, or otherwise pay attention to the stories they’d like to tell. They know how to clue other people into the value of their products. Oftentimes, subtle quality signals do the trick (think of messages such as “from the Oscar-winning director…” or think of how blurbs for new books often make comparisons to past successes). When objective quality is difficult to assess, framing also is important. It’s why Bell usually performs in symphony halls – that’s where the best musicians play. And why great art hangs at the Met, not on the side of a building. (Even though Banksy might disagree).

Which strategy and signals work best to convey quality will differ across people, situations, and industries. How you, say, set yourself apart from the competition in an entry-level banking job may be entirely different from how you make it to the top as an software developer. But the key is to have a strategy. The bottom line is that if you’re good, you have to let others know it, because otherwise they may never have a clue — and ignore you just like those morning commuters whisked by Joshua Bell.

Search Engine Optimization

The phrase Search Engine Optimization probably came into use in the year 1997. Firstly used by John Audette and his company Multimedia Marketing group.

At that time webmasters had to submit the address of their page, say URL, to different search engines. Then those search engines used to send ‘spiders’ and ‘crawlers’ to visit their websites, store data on their own server. This practice was aimed to get the relevant website on screen of the user when they searched something.

Back in 1990s search engines were depended on web masters provided information such as key words , meta tags. Meta tags are to guide each pages content.

In 1997 search engines realised that webmaster or web owners are keen to get page ranking and for serving this purpose they are manipulating the page rank. i.e. by giving excessive or irrelevant keywords. The then search engines like Altavista and Infoseek equipped themselves to cater such malpractice.

However, now the search engine optimization is equipped with advance technology and its quite hard to get the page rank by malicious techniques. As todays crawlers and spiders are clever enough to sense the duplicated content and they use to penalise such websites by downgrading their page ranking.

It is important that no such attempt be made to copy other websites data and to produce fresh content in order to be given respect by the Search engines.

There are three types of queries which are often looked into by users.

  1. Information Queries. People want to know about something.
  2. Navigational Queries. People want to search a specific page on the web
  3. Transactional Queries. People use this for purchasing online.

Before starting your blog, website, decide what type of your work will be and then focus on your task. There are many tools out there from which you can estimate the traffic you can bring on your page. One best tool is Google Adwords. For crawling information you can use the website http://www.webcrawlers.com. It will give you ample information about your page ranking but before this you will have to index your websites on different search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing. After you have indexed your website to these search engines, crawlers and spiders will visit your website and they will store information and subsequently they will give you ‘page rank’.

Getting Prominence.

There are number of method which can increase your prominence at different search engines. Cross linking between pages of the same website to provide more links to most imporant pages may improve your pages visibility.

Writing about the subject that is frequently searched in search engines i.e how to apply for elone? How to prepare for interview, for example.

Updating your content on daily basis will also let the search engine robots and crawlers to visit your site. This will also help you to get good ranking.

Always give attention to give relevant keywords to your web page’s meta data comprising the title tag and meta description. this will enable and enhance your website credibility and will give your site prominent place at search engines.

Money Talks Loud!

If you have heavily invested in marketing. And you are getting a lot of people to your site through paid means then you wont be waiting for SEO to rank your page so that you can come at top of the search engine results. Myths that you should have a attractive domain name, whether its short or long doesn’t matter if you are popular. There are many websites who just launched just few days before but have succeed to come at top. Money makes the mayor go! If you don’t have much money for advertisement then it will take about 6 to 12 months for getting the desired output.

Keep doing your work and don’t get disappointed at an early stage. Give time time!.

How Organisations work

Many of us are working either part time or full time. And it is quite vital to understand how organisations work. The purpose of this post is to give awareness for the subject matter.

Always be watchful for your actions in your workplace as nothing goes unnoticed. There are two channel ways that exist in every organisation.

  1. Formal Channel
  2. Informal Channel

Formal way of doing things

In any organisation there is system to do things. For example who will raise the requisition , who will authorise the transaction and finally who will procure it from the external vendor. Formal channels are slow, time taking and compliance based. In formal communication care is taken as to how the information will flow.

Informal way of doing things:

In informal way of doing things employees don’t need any type of authorization or any discipline to follow. Information passes all the ways among employees and the work process is faster than the formal procedure. For example, if you want to order an urgent chemical from warehouse but you don’t have enough time to get it approved , you will use the informal channel by making a call to your colleague in warehouse and will ask him to make arrangement to shift it your destination. Formally this will be done later.

While there are more uses of using the informal channel it has a disadvantage also and the most notorious is ‘Covering’. For example you did a blunder and your friends at work will don’t highlight it or it wont be brought into knowledge of the higher management.

Grapevine Effect:

There is no organisations where rumors don’t fly in the air. You will often find people standing at the corner and hear them whispering. It is said that about 80% of the rumors you hear are true. Management also spread these rumors intentionally though informally through the mouths of others to get the feedback. For example management is thinking to raise your pay by 20%, then they will tell this news to anyone who has much influence in the working class, for example your tea boy will come to you and will say ‘ I have heard that pay is increasing by 20% and this news will spread like a fire in the forest. Management will then get the response either employees are happier with the increase or not.

Employees Annual Appraisal

Performance Appraisals
Performance Appraisals (Photo credit: Mediocre2010)

Each year your manager will make your appraisal report. He will assess your objectives that were given to you at the start of the year and then will rate you according to your accomplishment. This is the most hard job for a manager to rate his sub-ordinate. If mishandled this can cause disturbance and lack of trust among his team members.

360 degree appraisal

It is often said that appraisal are often biased. Either your manager dislikes you for on personal grounds so he will under rate you, hence you may be the victim of his power and get no promotion. On the contrary it can also happen that he likes you or he has some personal relationships with you , so he will give you extra credit or rating so that you can be promoted. To cater this new appraisal system has been establised to appraise the employees.

360 degree appraisal is conducted by giving your appraisal form to any one. He can be you your boss or your sub-ordinate. By this way there is lesser chances that you will be victimized or intentionally undermined.

This also forces you to be professional and to treat everybody alike. In the traditional management system you just have to focus your boss and have to keep him happy. While in the 360 degree you appreciate everybody because you don’t know who is going to rate you this year.
